PRSisacompact24VolthatrailmodulecontainingtheswitchinglogicaswellasanintelligentdoubleDPSlave.ThedeviceallowstheconnectionoftwoDPMastersandthePROFIBUSconnectiontotheDPSlaves.TheSwitchcontrolsthestatusoftheoperationalDPMastersystemonthePROFIBUSprotocolandapplicationlevel. IncaseoffailureoftheoperationalMasterPRSphysicallyswitchesovertothestand-byMaster,whichseamlesslytakesovertheDPSlaves. IncontrasttotheestablishedFlyingMasterprincipleadoubleaddressconflictcannotoccurwithPRS,evenifthefailedDPMasterisstillactiveonthePROFIBUSlevel.FurthermoremanyDPMasterimplementationsonthemarketdonotsupporttheFlyingMasterprinciple.AsbothDPMastersarepreventedfrombeingconnectedtothebusatthesametime,thedeviceavoidsalldisadvantagesofcurrentredundancyconcepts. PRSprovidestheDPMasterswithimportantinformationabouttheredundancyoperation,i.e.thealivestateofthecomplementarysystem,italsoallowstheexecutionofaswitch-overcommand.Thedevicecanbeusedinverycomplexredundancysystems,i.e.inconnectionwithPROFIBUSOPCserversoroverlyingEthernetbasedcellnetworks.FurthermorePRScanbecontrolledviabothintegratedEthernetconnectionsifdirectcontrolviathePROFIBUSisnotpossible. ThereisnosinglepointoffailurewiththePRSbecauseifthedevicedoesdevelopafaulttheMastertoSlavecommunicationwouldcontinuewithoutinterrupted.
